Biography
Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, he experienced the social challenges and issues prevalent in the inner city. He made the decision to move to Kalamazoo, Michigan in his early 20s, seeking a fresh start. However, his time in Gary was not without its difficulties, as he was expelled from all public schools due to an incident involving a gun. Despite these challenges, Genesis has persevered and found success in various fields.
As a professional Hip Hop artist, Genesis has built a career spanning over 20 years. His music has been featured in 17 different television shows, including popular syndicated series such as Forensic Files and the George Lopez Show. Through his music, he uses his platform to address social issues and create new ways of community organizing.
In addition to his music career, Genesis is the founder and creator of the BLOCKS Club initiative. This initiative, which stands for Building Leadership Organizing Communities for Keys to Succeed, utilizes Hip Hop as a tool for community organizing. Ed Genesis believes in the power of Hip Hop to bring about positive change and empower individuals within communities.
In 2018, Ed Genesis expanded his work as a Racial Healing Practitioner. He has been the focus artist for four different Art Hops and has hosted and MCed events such as the National Day of Racial Healing. He is also a six-year consecutive host for the Kalamazoo Poetry Festival beginning in 2018. Through his speaking engagements and storytelling, Ed Genesis aims to heal and inspire others while actively working within the community.
In 2022, Ed Genesis joined Kalamazoo Valley Community College as an instructor, presenting his own curriculum and course titled “Subject to Review: A Look at Social Justice Through a Hip Hop Lens.” This course has gained popularity and has become a movement, attracting individuals from the community who are eager to learn about the cultural impact of Hip Hop and its reflection of societal issues.
Furthermore, in 2022, Ed Genesis released a Hip Hop coloring/activity book, aimed as educating youth about the fundamentals of Hip Hop and its connection to social justice issues. Libraries, schools, and organizations have embraced this book as a tool for outreach and education.
Ed Genesis’ journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and a commitment to community. Through his various endeavors, he continues to make a positive impact, using his talents and experience to inspire and empower others.
